The One Million Climate Jobs Campaign is an alliance of labour, social movements and other civil society organisations in South Africa that are mobilising for real solutions to the threat of climate change. Cutting the pollution of those gasses that lead to climate change is urgent and involves doing many things. Overcoming unemployment and giving decent work to our people is just as urgent. By placing the interests of workers and the poor at the forefront of strategies to combat climate change we can simultaneously halt climate change and address our jobs bloodbath. This is why we campaign for our government to create a million climate jobs now. Our demand is based on well-researched solutions for how South Africa can immediately begin a just transition to a low carbon economy.
We face a climate crisis and an economic crisis in Britain and across the world. We have people who need jobs and urgent work that needs to be done to shift to a low-carbon economy. The Campaign against Climate Change Trade Union group has led the UK campaign for a million climate jobs, linking to similar campaigns in other countries.
We have come together as members of unions, environmental and social justice organizations to form a common front of civil society groups for the building of a green economy in Canada. In so doing, we realize we are living in one of those critical moments of history wherein urgent decisions and actions must be taken that will ultimately affect our destiny as a people, a nation, and the planet itself.
The Belgian Climate Coalition - a network of 70 trade unions, environmental and development organisations - launched the communication campaign www.Jobs4climate.be The campaign highlights the economic benefits of strong climate policies, focusing on job creation through sustainable investments. In Belgium investments in energy renovations, renewables, the smart grid and public transport would create 60.000 new direct and indirect jobs. On the website you can find five short movies in Dutch and French. The campaign aims to spread the word about the benefits of strong climate policies and reach out to more than 2 million Belgians. It is being supported by CAN Europe members BBLV, 11.11.11 and Greenpeace Belgium.

In South Africa, Great Britain, Canada and other countries, campaigns for Climate Jobs are bringing together environmentalists, trade unionists and organisations of the unemployed. Come and hear about these campaigns and discuss how we can create a global network uniting workers and environmentalists which can help solve the economic and environmental crises. Climate jobs are a key bridge to a low carbon, sustainable society.
